La nanotecnología en las ciencias biológicas

La nanotecnología ha acompañado al hombre en varias etapas de su evolución, permitiendo el desarrollo de productos innovadores que han mejorado su calidad de vida. Actualmente, ésta es una de las áreas de mayor crecimiento a nivel mundial en lo que a investigación y aplicación tecnológica se refiere. En este contexto, áreas de las Ciencias Biológicas en constante desarrollo, como la agricultura, los alimentos, el medio ambiente y la medicina, han incorporado avances nanotecnológicos de alto impacto en los últimos años. Dentro de los productos desarrollados con mayor aplicación se incluyen nanomateriales, nanosistemas de liberación, nanopelículas, nanorobots, nanodispositivos electrónicos, nanotubos de carbono y nanopartículas metálicas, entre otros. El presente trabajo aborda los principales productos desarrollados a partir de la nanotecnología y su aplicación en las Ciencias Biológicas, destacando la importancia y el avance que otorgan a la vida del hombre

Worm castings and naphthaleneacetic acid in the growth and yield of zucchini in shade houses

The cultivation of zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) under protected conditions has limitations, such as low fruit set due to poor pollination, which affect the commercial yield and profitability of the crop. The investigation was carried out to know the influence of earthworm humus (HL) and naphthaleneacetic acid (ANA) on the growth and yield of two zucchini cultivars in shade houses. A randomized block experimental design with eight treatments and 10 repetitions was used. The treatments influenced plant height, leaf area index, stem dry weight, leaf dry weight, plant dry weight and fruit set; however, there were no differences because of the treatments in stem diameter, leaf greenness and number of leaves. With the HMX58 cultivar, the highest plant height was obtained: while because of the Prestige cultivar, the highest index of leaf area, dry weight of leaves and dry weight of the whole plant. The highest yield was obtained with the HMX58+LC treatment, while fruit set and number of fruits increased because of earthworm humus. The diameter and weight of the fruit increased because of ANA in both cultivars, and the length of the fruit in the Prestige cultivar

The Spanish corporate network in the long run. Evidence of a state-influenced market economy

En las últimas décadas se ha popularizado la literatura sobre variedades de capitalismo, que estudia comparativamente las distintas formas en las que cada país organiza su economía. Los especialistas han distinguido inicialmente dos modelos puros y antagónicos: las economías liberales de mercado (LME), y las economías coordinadas de mercado (CME). Posteriormente, se han añadido nuevas categorías, como las economías de mercado influenciadas por el Estado (SME). En este artículo se defiende que la red corporativa es una dimensión más que puede considerarse para clasificar una economía en una variedad determinada de capitalismo. El análisis de la red española desde 1917 hasta la actualidad señala la importancia de las empresas públicas en su configuración, compartiendo protagonismo con la banca privada. Esta constatación y la comparación de los indicadores de la red española con las de otros países de su entorno, confirman la inclusión de España entre las SMEThe topic of varieties of capitalism comparatively studies the different ways in which each country organizes its economy. Literature has initially distinguished two antagonistic models: liberal market economies (LMEs), and coordinated market economies (CMEs). Subsequently, new categories have been added, such as State-influenced market economies (SMEs). In this article it is argued that the corporate network is one more dimension that can be considered to classify an economy in a determined variety of capitalism. The analysis of the Spanish network from 1917 to the present day shows the importance of the public companies in their configuration. Visualization and 3D Reconstruction of Flame Cells of Taenia solium (Cestoda)

BACKGROUND: Flame cells are the terminal cells of protonephridial systems, which are part of the excretory systems of invertebrates. Although the knowledge of their biological role is incomplete, there is a consensus that these cells perform excretion/secretion activities. It has been suggested that the flame cells participate in the maintenance of the osmotic environment that the cestodes require to live inside their hosts. In live Platyhelminthes, by light microscopy, the cells appear beating their flames rapidly and, at the ultrastructural, the cells have a large body enclosing a tuft of cilia. Few studies have been performed to define the localization of the cytoskeletal proteins of these cells, and it is unclear how these proteins are involved in cell function. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Parasites of two different developmental stages of T. solium were used: cysticerci recovered from naturally infected pigs and intestinal adults obtained from immunosuppressed and experimentally infected golden hamsters. Hamsters were fed viable cysticerci to recover adult parasites after one month of infection. In the present studies focusing on flame cells of cysticerci tissues was performed. Using several methods such as video, confocal and electron microscopy, in addition to computational analysis for reconstruction and modeling, we have provided a 3D visual rendition of the cytoskeletal architecture of Taenia solium flame cells. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We consider that visual representations of cells open a new way for understanding the role of these cells in the excretory systems of Platyhelminths. After reconstruction, the observation of high resolution 3D images allowed for virtual observation of the interior composition of cells. A combination of microscopic images, computational reconstructions and 3D modeling of cells appears to be useful for inferring the cellular dynamics of the flame cell cytoskeleton

Desafíos en ciencia, tecnología e innovación en tiempo de Coronavirus Covid-19

El objetivo del presente estudio consistió en determinar el impacto de actividad física en la percepción de bienestar y salud en adolescentes, durante el periodo de confinamiento condicionado por la pandemia COVID-19. Se realizó un estudio observacional-longitudinal. N = 50 participantes (28 mujeres, 22 hombres; edad X = 15.12), quienes llevaron a cabo un programa de actividad física diseñado para espacios pequeños, además de realizar un pre y post-test. Los resultados muestran que hubo una mejora en la percepción de bienestar y salud después del periodo de actividad física (p=.05). Se concluye que, en la población de estudio, el programa de actividad física en espacios pequeños fue efectivo en la mejora de la percepción del bienestar y la salud

El poder extraordinario que tiene la literatura, en la vida de un ser humano, es incalculable; no sólo es abrir un libro y pasar los ojos por las páginas; ¡No! Es dejarse atrapar, dejarse llevar por mundos y contextos distintos, diversos, pletóricos de vivencias humanas que nos hacen únicos e irrepetibles. Cada vez que abrimos un libro y nos damos el permiso de leerlo, nos volvemos mejores seres humanos, porque comprendemos más al otro, o por lo menos, tratamos de reconocer cómo vivían, cómo pensaban, cómo actuaban, en otras épocas, incluyendo la nuestra. Con la lectura, podemos entender por qué los seres humanos son como son, potenciamos la empatía y fortalecemos la conciencia moral, entre algunas ventajas que tiene este proceso que nos acompaña a lo largo de toda la vida. Erratum: Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Interpretation: By quantifying levels and trends in exposures to risk factors and the resulting disease burden, this assessment offers insight into where past policy and programme efforts might have been successful and highlights current priorities for public health action. Decreases in behavioural, environmental, and occupational risks have largely offset the effects of population growth and ageing, in relation to trends in absolute burden. Conversely, the combination of increasing metabolic risks and population ageing will probably continue to drive the increasing trends in non-communicable diseases at the global level, which presents both a public health challenge and opportunity. We see considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity in levels of risk exposure and risk-attributable burden. Although levels of development underlie some of this heterogeneity, O/E ratios show risks for which countries are overperforming or underperforming relative to their level of development. As such, these ratios provide a benchmarking tool to help to focus local decision making. Our findings reinforce the importance of both risk exposure monitoring and epidemiological research to assess causal connections between risks and health outcomes, and they highlight the usefulness of the GBD study in synthesising data to draw comprehensive and robust conclusions that help to inform good policy and strategic health planning

4to. Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad. Memoria académica

Este volumen acoge la memoria académica de la Cuarta edición del Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2017, desarrollado entre el 29 de noviembre y el 1 de diciembre de 2017 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS) en su sede de Guayaquil. El Congreso ofreció un espacio para la presentación, difusión e intercambio de importantes investigaciones nacionales e internacionales ante la comunidad universitaria que se dio cita en el encuentro. El uso de herramientas tecnológicas para la gestión de los trabajos de investigación como la plataforma Open Conference Systems y la web de presentación del Congreso http://citis.blog.ups.edu.ec/, hicieron de CITIS 2017 un verdadero referente entre los congresos que se desarrollaron en el país. La preocupación de nuestra Universidad, de presentar espacios que ayuden a generar nuevos y mejores cambios en la dimensión humana y social de nuestro entorno, hace que se persiga en cada edición del evento la presentación de trabajos con calidad creciente en cuanto a su producción científica. Quienes estuvimos al frente de la organización, dejamos plasmado en estas memorias académicas el intenso y prolífico trabajo de los días de realización del Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad al alcance de todos y todas
